31134_1983_03_Healey_Mills_A3_800dpi

            A rather interesting photograph of the east end of Healey Mills yard on the 17th March 1983.

The main focus is one of the twenty “skinhead” Class 31/1’s (fitted with discs in lieu of headcode boxes) 31134 departing the yard with a mixed freight. 

To the left of this freight is a row of withdrawn locomotives with two Peaks, a Class 15, two Class 25, four Class 40’s and a Class 08 with the Class 15 (D8233, DB968001) being of particular note. In the centre background is Healey Mills MPD and on the left Healey Mills yard with four Class 08 pilot engines visible. In total there are twenty four locomotives visible in this photograph.

Locomotive History
31134 was originally D5552 and was one of ten class  31/1 locomotives built with headcode discs after the change in design to four character headcode boxes. The first ten class 31/1’s D5520 – 29 (31102 – 11) where built with headcode discs with D5530 (31112) being the first built with headcode boxes, however due to supply difficulties, in order to maintain locomotive deliveries to British Railways Brush fitted ten of the next thirty two locomotives D5535/39/43/47/51/52/55/56/59/62 (31117/21/25/29/33/34/37/38/41/44) with headcode discs. 

D5552 entered traffic in September 1959 allocated to Ipswich MPD. In April 1968 D5552 was released from Doncaster works following classified repair during which its unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine was replaced by a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine. After thirty six years service 31134 was withdrawn in March 1996 and broken up at Wigan CRDC during July 1999.
