20154_1976_08_Toton_A3_800dpi

            By the summer of 1976 green livered locomotives were starting to become thin on the ground, Corporate blue had been introduced ten years before in 1966. However, a fair number of the third batch of Class 20 locomotives, delivered in 1966 in green were still carrying their original livery. This was both a testament to the robustness of the design (extended periods between works repairs) and also to the fact that Crewe Works were undertaking classified repairs on the class in the early 1970’s and for some reason released a number of repaired locomotives back into traffic without a repaint. 20154 is one of those locomotives still at work carrying its now rather worn original green paintwork, Toton MPD, 15th August 1976.

Locomotive History
20154 was originally D8154, built by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry Works, entering traffic in August 1966 and allocated new to Toton. It stayed at Toton until the the end of 1979 when it was transferred to Immingham, Tinsley and Eastfield before ending its days back at Toton in July 1986. It received its last classified repair at Derby Works in 1987 and was withdrawn from Toton in April 1993. In 1999 it was sold to the English Electric Preservation Group and moved to the Churnet Valley Railway until it arrived at the Great Central Railway (North) in 2007.
