            46031 in charge of a southbound cross country express stands in platform 4 at Derby, 17th December 1982. Nine months later 46031 was no more having been broken up at Swindon Works.

It is five weeks since my ill-fated day out day out to Peterborough, Cambridge and March which resulted in a Saturday night in A&E and seven days in hospital due to a collapsed lung. I am still off work on sick leave and with the wife at work and myself being bored stuck at home I decide to have a short ride out on the train to Derby. As you can see the day was cold, wet and miserable and the trip did not go well as I ended up back in hospital for twenty four hours. I was also in mega trouble with my wife who I had not told I was going out because it was basically against Doctors orders.

Locomotive History
46031 was built at Derby Works as D168 and entered traffic in May 1962. It was part of a batch of twenty seven Peak Type 4 locomotives allocated to Gateshead for North East – South West, Trans-Pennine and secondary East Coast Main Line duties. Apart from a four month spell at Holbeck from January 1972 it would remain a Gateshead engine for its entire career. In April 1983 it suffered a main generator flashover which resulted in its withdrawal. It was broken up during August 1983 at Swindon Works.
