Wye_SB_1808 - a photo on Flickriver

Wye_SB_1808

            The semi derelict Wye signal box, Kent, 17th August 2018. The box was built by Saxby and Farmer on behalf of the South Eastern Railway in 1893 and was located to the north of the station adjacent to the quite extensive goods yard. The level crossing at the south of the station was operated by a ground frame on the south end of the platform released by the signal box with the level crossing gates being hand worked. The box was fitted with a 24 lever Saxby and Farmer mechanical frame. The box closed in 2003 when the control of the area passed to the Canterbury - Wye Control Centre situated at Canterbury West, although the antiquated method of operating the level crossing was retained with the ground frame being released by Canterbury Wye Control Centre and is still the method of operation in use today.
