H O M E M A D E - a photo on Flickriver

            My upload for a weekly challenge I'm doing with a group of Flickr friends. This week's theme is "homemade". 

Growing up on several acres in what was then Melbourne's outer suburbs, we had many pets including several sheep. My mother was into spinning and weaving and knitting their wool into all kinds of garments, and she liked the idea of having a black sheep for its coloured fleece.  We got this boy, who we named "Dusty", from the Newmarket Saleyards, as coloured sheep were unwanted back then and were either put down or given away. 

Dusty's fleece went into the making of this vest, along with some white wool dyed yellow by boiling it with onion skins.  Mum also handmade the buttons from a eucalypt branch. I wore this vest very proudly in the 1970s. 

The image on the left is my own, and the one on the right is from my late father's collection.
