Madison works at the family vegetable stall at my local market. I saw her every week, but one day - happening to be there on a weekday - got a chance to talk with her. I was attracted by her shirt reading "Lynchburg Hornets" which is the name and mascot of my college. It's a small, private, liberal arts college in Central Virginia, and I don't often see people who go or went there. "I don't go there," said Madison when I remarked on the shirt, "it belongs to a friend." Oh! Turns out Madison attends a much larger, better known university where she plays softball - a real accomplishment given the nature of the school's atheletic programme. She played locally as a teen and plays on travelling teams (with a mutual friend) as well. Now, I love a ball player - soft- or hard-ball. I had a great time talking with Madison about her position and team. She had embarked on a course of study that would lead to a career in sports physiology, but recently changed her major area of study to agricutural management - to be better able to carry on the family farm and business. Althogether admirable, I think... even if she was not a "Lynchburg Hornet". When I asked her to show me the shirt anyway, this is what she gave me - with a big smile beneath the mask.
