Pied Stilt - a photo on Flickriver

Pied Stilt

            Himantopus leucocephalus

Parent and chick at Rottnest Island, Perth.  The picture was actually taken this time last year and I just found it on my files from the trip!

I originally identified this as a Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus).  However Marj k pointed out that the Australian bird is now regarded as a separate species.  Drew Davison said the following:

"Pied Stilt (found in Australia) have recently been split from Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus). Pied Stilt is a species, and has recently been called White-headed Stilt.
The current status is Pied Stilt (Himantopus leucocephalus)."
