Hills Creek, Idaburn, Central Otago

The alluvial gold diggings of the 1860s in this area were known as Blackstone Hill. However, with the geographic hill itself of the same name 8km SW, the name changed to Hills Creek (after Alfred Hill, one of the early store owners of the town that developed).
This is the old Blackstone Hill (aka Hills Creek) School, set back off the road and tucked into some pines. It was built in the late 1800s - sometime between 1881 & 1890. It served the area until closing in 1949, and is now administered by the Blackstone Hill School Charitable Trust.
This is one of the few remaining buildings in Hills Creek left over from the gold- and coal-mining era. At its peak, there were 13 hotels operating in the township! Now the school building, a stone cottage, and cemetery are all that remain.
