the meeting near Galley Hill on a foggy morn: Reigate Heath sssi

            Even 200 years ago the Heath was a wild unfriendly place, covered with gorse and heather.  Gorse and unsafe trees are presently being removed from the heath.

Woe betide the hapless traveller, in the past, who ventured into the area on their way from Reigate to Dorking.  Highwaymen and brigands lay in wait and it is rumoured that the chimney of a local tavern, 'The Skimmington Castle', was used as a look-out post by the robbers to spot their victims approach.

But anyone who was caught and convicted as a highwayman was guaranteed to meet their end on the Heath too.  A gibbet was erected at a site now called 'Galley Hill', which was named after the gallows which once stood there.  This is close to the present windmill.

Local legend has it, a former landlord of the nearby Black Horse pub in West Street, was hung there after being convicted of highway robbery.

The last remains of the gibbet were finally removed in 1817 when trees were planted on the Heath.
