This pyramid has intrigued many, with its inscription 'The wisdom of Solomon', and apparently once had the same text in Hebrew characters. Some have suggested it had been intended to be somewhere on the church itself, while others think it was simply a monument to someone buried there. It was Grade II listed in 1997 as "Churchyard monument in the form of a pyramid, c1730. Portland stone."

The church, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor was completed in 1727 and consecrated in 1730 and it seems likely that this pyramid was originally intended to be a part of the building, though there is no obvious place for it.

We can only speculate as to why it was left here a few yards away. The tower is topped by four small columns, each with a small pyramid on its top, a quite different design to that shown on Hawksmoor's plan in the British Library, and apparently the plans were changed a number of times during construction. Perhaps one of these plans, later abandoned, involved this larger single pyramid, either on its own or possibly it was intended to go at the centre where the flagpole (allowed to fly the White Ensign as a naval landmark) now stands, elevated a little as a final peak to the tower.
