Princess Charlotte: what if...? - a photo on Flickriver

            “My Charlotte is gone.” This is a simple but touching memorial to Princess Charlotte (1798-1817), who died just hours after suffering a stillbirth at the distressingly young age of 21. The stone is at the highest point in Claremont Landscape Garden, a National Trust property near Esher in Surrey which was once home to the princess and her husband Prince Leopold.

Princess Charlotte, daughter of King George IV, was the original "people’s princess". As heir to the throne and the only well-regarded member of the royal family at the time, she was seen as the hope of the nation. Her premature death caused an unprecedented torrent of national grief – not, perhaps, dissimilar to that surrounding Princess Diana in 1997 – but unlike Diana’s passing, Charlotte’s death altered the course of British history and culture for all time.

Why so? Well, had she lived, she would have become Queen Charlotte on the death of her father. But instead, the throne passed to her cousin, Victoria… and the rest, as they say, really is history. 

The Victorian age would have been the Charlottian one – and the line of succession would have been entirely different: there would have been no Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI or Queen Elizabeth II.
