In the land of the gods...... - a photo on Flickriver

            ......the impressive ruins of the Parthenon which dominates the skyline of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. 

Built around 450BC, the temple was dedicated to the goddess Athena and was a larger replacement of an earlier temple which was sacked, looted and burned by the Persians 50 years or so earlier.

The temple has had many incarnations, firstly as a temple to the old gods (Athena), then as a treasury storing the gold and valuables of Athens, around 600AD it was converted into a Christian church and then after the Turkish Ottoman invasion, when the building was already 2000 years old, in 1460 it was converted into a mosque. 

In the 17th century it was used as an ammunition store and in 1687 it was sadly blown up after a bombardment by the Venetians.

Finally in the early 19th century Lord Elgin, a British archaeologist, took bits of it back to Britain which are now displayed in the British Museum as the Elgin Marbles.
