Ganymede Europa Io Jupiter Callisto - a photo on Flickriver

            The view of Jupiter on the southeastern horizon just after sunset last night. The big round blob is Jupiter, the three dots to the left are (from left to right) Ganymede, Europa and Io; Callisto is the faint dot on the right. These are the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. Jupiter has 63 known moons, but these four are the big ones first discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610, so my 20 year old 500mm lens has just about caught up with Galileo's 400 year old telescope! Actually, that's a little unfair on the lens - because not least for reasons of optical design intent, telescopes make very poor camera lenses and conversely, camera lenses make at best mediocre telescopes, of which I may say more in a comment below.
