In its heyday, at the beginning of the christian era, Apamea boasted a population of about half a million people (120.000 free people), destroyed by violent earthquakes in 1152 & 1170
Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Septimus Severus, Caracalla came here, ............... me too..........
the 2 kms long & 37 meters wide main street is lined with about 1800 columns, 9 meters high, are unusually carved with straight or twisted fluting. Making the city's cardo maximus, at cross roads, one can see the remains of the side streets. All along the length of the cardo & the decumanus (which serves as the modern access to the site) the ground is littered with big chunks of rock, sculptures, once part of a temple, roman villa, church or shop, some have Greek inscriptions.
On both sides of the colonnades, built in the 2nd century AD, distant of 42 meters, one can find some space in the shape of a recess (see picture 1000394)
some part of the gateways are still standing, Antioch gate at the northern end, Emesa (Homs) gate at the southern gate
Un des principaux centres des Seleucides. Fondée au IIème siècle avant JC par Selecus Nicatôr Ier, qui donna le nom de sa femme à cette ville, située dans la vallée de l'Oronte, la ville fut un important carrefour de routes vers l'Est.
A son apogée, elle comptait jusqu'à 1/2 million d'habitants, dont 120.000 hommes libres, fut détruite par de violents séismes en 1152 & 1170

La rue principale de 2 km de long, de 37 m de large, est bordée par 1800 colonnes de 9 m de haut, ayant des futs irréguliers, soit cannelés soit torsadés. Marquant le cardo maximus, à des carrefours, on peut voir des rues transversales. Tout le long du cardo et du decumanus (qui est maintenant l'accès au site), on voit le sol jonché d'énormes blocs de pierres et de sculptures appartenant à un temple, une villa romaine, une église ou une échoppe, on peut parfois y voir une inscription grecque
Des 2 côtés des colonnades, construites au IIème siècle après JC, distante chacune de 42 m, se trouve un espace en forme de niche (voir photo 1000394)
Une partie des portails d'entrée ont subsisté, la porte d'Antioche tout au nord, et au sud celle d'Emesa (Homs)
