Baird's Sandpiper at Point Petre, Prince Edward County | Calidris bairdii | Bécasseau de Baird

            It has been a good fall migration for Baird's Sandpiper in Prince Edward County. Not sure what this means in the bigger picture. Successful breeding year? Unusual winds from the west? Nothing? Usually sightings come in singles, and often they are missed, but this year I have seen lots of them, up to four at a time. Very nice, as they are a bird of great and subtle beauty.

This individual was one of two at Point Petre at the southwestern tip of the county, a good spot for birding. Contrary to its spelling, the location is pronounced Point Peter, not Pet-rah or Pete-ree, as one might think. Important to get the pronunciation right, or the locals will mistake you for some doofus who has only lived in the county for just short of two years!
