American Mink | Neovison vison | Vison d'Amérique at Point Traverse Woods in the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada

            A very strange muttering was coming from the base of the low lakeside cliffs at Point Traverse Woods in the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area. After two unsuccessful attempts to push through to the shore (turned back by heavy vegetation) I found a place where I could gain the cliff edge and look down in the direction of the sound. 

It was loud and close, but the source would not reveal itself in response to whistling or squeaking (kissing the back of my hand to imitate the sound of an animal in distress).  My repertoire of animal-attracting noises exhausted, I tossed a pebble down. The bouncing little stone drew the animal out - an American Mink. With the sun almost set, I set the ISO to 4000, opened the aperture all the way, and leaned carefully over the cliff.

A quick squeak this time worked and prompted the subject to look up, and I was able to secure a few images in the soft light. That might be me on the horizon reflected in the subject's eyes. Not sure what the muttering was about, whether it was having a dispute with another Mink or was just grumpy about the general state of the world.
