The Haniver - Bijou Planks 288/365 - a photo on Flickriver

            When seen from a boat, the Haniver resembles a ray or skate swimming near the surface.  However it is actually of the goblin family in the fey branch.  In clear view it is a small, bizarre humanoid creature has fin-like wings, strange slimy skin, and tiny black eyes burning with malevolence.

I've never seen one of those.
It's very yuck!!!

The Haniver can launch itself from the water and onto the deck of even very large ships.  Once on board it can flap and slide about.

I'm never going to feel safe on my yacht again.
Oh, I know, it-  WHAT?  You have a yacht??
Yes, it's really nice.

Although Hanivers spend most of their time skimming waves and teasing marine creatures, they do love to board sea craft.  Hanivers are compulsive thieves of bright or shiny objects.  They are small, around 5 pounds, and cannot carry off large items. They have an obsession with closed boxes which makes them easy to trap if one understands how Hanivers operate.  

Can I come ride on your yacht?
Are you going to bring your anvil?
... Should I?

According to legend, hanivers fear their dead and will avoid anyone with a dead haniver in their purse or nailed over the door. Since the gremlin's flesh rots quickly, preparing such a talisman requires some leather-working skill or other knowledge. The "candied gremlins" available in many coastal communities are in fact dried fish or rays in the shape of a haniver covered in salt and sugar.
