2108_0579 Pontiac & Milky Way - a photo on Flickriver

            Those of you who have enjoyed my past photos of this old shot up car will recognize it as a 1939 Pontiac, original colour green. I keep looking for new ways to portray it. During the annual Perseid meteor shower in August, a new idea popped into my head...

The day after the Perseid peak, I drove the long country road after dark to find the car. This wasn't easy; I was driving into pitch blackness. Not a street light, porch light, only my headlights to pierce the intense dark. I overshot, figured it out, crept back, found it. 

Had I used multiple exposures, masking, and Starry Landscape Stacker - which I have but have only begun fooling around with - I could have used ambient light to illuminate the car and the pasture surrounding it. But I wanted a more dramatic, spotlit effect, so I used a crude little hand held LED light on the car, and toned it down during processing. I wanted the star-filled sky above a vast expanse of inky dark nothingness. I would have preferred more meteors, but the show that night was relatively subdued, at least during the couple of hours I spent in that field. Nevertheless, the result is pretty close to what I had imagined.
