2102_0943 Icicles

            Technically spring is here, but March on the northern prairie can be a time of erratic weather. This morning, for example. The sun was shining, but I had to scrape frost off my car windshield, and a nippy breeze made the -5C air temperature significantly colder. Some days are warm. Others are cold. It still could snow. Easily. In fact, I'll be surprised if it doesn't.

The critters were mostly lying low this morning, and the brown hills didn't inspire me. We're still a few weeks away from green grass and wildflowers. The birds have not yet returned en masse. This is always a difficult time of year for me as a nature photographer.

But I'm not complaining. The past couple of months have been good, and so I have pulled yet another ice set from my recent files, all from February and March. There should be more than enough material to last until something more interesting happens in the world just outside my door.

I photographed these icicles last month through a hole in the snow and ice covering the Frenchman River. It was a little tricky. I had to push the tripod to the edge, and there was no guarantee the structure would not collapse, so I worked fast: get in, get the shot, and get out! Either my judgement is very good about these things or I'm one lucky fool. Maybe a little of both...
