1803_0298 Dinosaur Provincial Park - a photo on Flickriver

            I visited the badlands two days in a row, hiking the trails and doing some off-trail cross-country floundering in places where that is permitted. It wasn't especially cold and I had the whole park to myself. Sandstone rills are always highly graphic material for the camera, and more so with snow patches. 

You can see how the eye starts at the lower right and then curves into the middle of the photo: it was important to keep that edge line at the left entirely inside the frame. I was down on my knees for this shot, with the tripod legs splayed out low; down low is my favourite POV for landscape work, wildlife, and macro too. No wonder my knees are wonky! I remember reading the text of a convocation address given by Kurt Vonnegut, in which he advised, "Take care of your knees; you'll miss them when they're gone." On the other hand, what are bodies for if not to wear out until there's nothing left?

I had a great time. Saw the weather report that freezing rain and snow were on the way, and made a run for home just ahead of the latest and perhaps last wintry blast.
