Südzufuhrbahn / Southern Feeder Railway: TU2-274 with the market train at Rudnytsia, Ukraine, 30-05-2003.

            Only 3 days a week a train runs during daylight on the Haivoron-Rudnytsia narrow gauge railway in southwest Ukraine.

Apparentlty it runs on market days and provides the rural population a means of transport to the markets in different villages along the line. The travellers are mainly older peasant women with colorfull dresses.

Because of the large amount and size of luggage this train carries an additional luggage van, which actually is a freight van (box car).  Inside the two coaches I saw all kinds of luggage, amongst which a large open plastic bag with little ducklings, a box full of very small lettuce plants, clothing, etc.

I took the photos at Bershad, Dokhno, Sherbakovo and Rudnytsia while travelling on that train. The stops were long enough to jump out, take pictures and jump back on the train. 

Here at Rudnytsia the narrow gauge track ends but until 1996 it used to continue to Camenca in present-day Moldova. The station building of the broad gauge railway is seen on the left of the picture, so the narrow gauge train is standing on the 'station square'. Notice that the road is unpaved. 70 year back in time...
