Sheffield & Tinsley Canal

Canal Basin

Opened in 1819 to carry boats from the navigable River Don into the centre of Sheffield.

The canal's business was badly hit when the railway reached Sheffield in 1830.

The Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway acquired the canal in 1848 and it became part of the River Don Navigation Company. 

The Sheffield & South Yorkshire Canal Company acquired the River Don Navigation Company in 1895.

Around 1900 there were plans to enlarge the canal, and even to replace it with a ship canal, but those plans never came to fruition.

The canal was never enlarged and it still has locks just large enough for Yorkshire keels, which are 61 feet long by 15 feet 6 inches wide.

Architecture

The canal basin retains many original features – notably the buildings around the terminal basin. 

The Straddle Warehouse is particularly noteworthy. It was built over the canal to make loading and unloading easier, and now dominates the scene in its new life as an office complex.
