The Bartlett Family 1906 - a photo on Flickriver

The Bartlett Family 1906

            Today it is the turn of my other grandmother to feature on my flickr photostream. Beatrice Ethel Bartlett was born on the 17th May 1887 in Merriott, Somerset. She is shown here in a rare early photograph taken in 1906 standing at rear left. Next to her at the rear is her father Francis John Bartlett. Dominating the family group is mother Sarah Ann (Giles) holding young Stanley Carey Bartlett born 1906, on the right is Edward John, known all his life as Jack, born in 1902, and on the left is Frederick Arthur "Fred" born in 1899.

My grandmother had five brothers, the two older ones would have been in school or perhaps the oldest was even working when this photograph was taken. Two years later, in 1908, a sister arrived, Dorothy "Doll", which was a span of 18 years from oldest to youngest.

The house is very interesting as it still stands at the end of a street in my home town of Bridgend, although it is barely recognisable from this image, gone has the charm of the bricks now all rendered over, gone has the interesting railing and vegetable plot, in its place is just the pavement, and the trellised porchway is non existent.

Photographs of my grandmother are very rare rare in her early years, I have just one other taken in 1912. Although born in Somerset she soon moved to near Blackwood in Monmouthshire, where the first few of her brothers were born, before moving to Bridgend. In 1915 she married my grandfather Stanley James Simmonds and consequently spent the rest of her life in Bridgend.
