Much Marcle Steam Rally 1975 (12)

The Ross-on-Wye Steam Engine Society which runs the Welland Steam Rally has been holding rallies since 1965. For many years the event was held in Ross, from there it moved to Much Marcle, then Upton, and in 1993 it finally settled on its own site in Welland, Worcestershire. During the last forty or more years that I have been visiting steam rallies I have only been to three previous shows run by the society, the first of these visits was when the show was held at Much Marcle near Ledbury. I shall post a few photographs taken of that event forty years ago on a very hot, humid and hazy weekend in 1975.

Also in my archive are fifteen colour slides of the event, but the majority of them seem to be replicating the black and white shots I've previously shown you. As the mono pictures are of much better quality I shan't repeat the repeats but show you some of those that are exclusive to the slides. They were taken on a (dying) Practica Super TL SLR camera with f2.8 Domiplan lens and unlike the mono shots which have never been seen, the slides used to do the rounds of vintage clubs back in the early 1980s so have many dust spots which take a while to remove although I have only taken out the worst of them. In addition, the camera had a fault resulting in the photos being incorrectly exposed and all the slides are very pale; the camera was later repaired and went on to enjoy a new life in Australia with my brother.

During the first year of exhibiting at vintage rallies I 'gatecrashed' a few events. As one usually had to book exhibiting space months in advance I was too impatient in that first season to wait until the following year to show my engine, so would just arrive at a rally and enquire whether there were any exhibitors who hadn't turned up and could I fill their space? Much Marcle in 1975 was one such show I gatecrashed, although I had previously been told to turn up as they'd probably find room. My souvenir plaque board has just two plaques so this was my third show as an exhibitor, but not all those I 'gatecrashed' gave me a plaque!

Back in those days for some inexplicable reason I used to like to take photographs in portrait mode, this has left blank areas of sky and little foreground interest so I have cropped some of the upright images to a square format for display here.
