From 1984 to 1991 I organised a display of vintage machinery and miscellania at the annual Ewenny Summer Show. I'm not quite sure how I came to be involved in this but someone from the show committee must have known about my interest. The first year there were just five of us exhibiting. In subsequent years I set out to provide a display of varied interest, it was easy to find friends or acquaintances who owned stationary engines, but what I was looking for was added interest and so went out of my way to invite exhibits I knew would be attractive to the visiting public.

Usually there would be a few stationary engines on show, these provided a good basis for any display, but usually I invited those exhibits that were driving something to show how they would have been used in the past, a corn mill, chaffer, dynamo or whatever else could be persuaded to attend. In addition I invited people that had unusual collections, pedal cars, enamel signs, blow lamps, fuel cans, cast-iron implement seats, if it was out of the ordinary, I invited it.

The photo shown here was taken at the first show in 1984 and here we can see my exhibit. I must have just about emptied the garage to put on this display. It was the trial year for the event and there were just four others exhibiting beside myself. There's all sorts of things on display here including a small clockwork train layout part of which you can see on the left. I've no recollection of what became of those ploughs, they were sold so long ago, no idea who bought them. The smaller items, cameras, gramophones and toys I still have. The large canvas advert in the background was a window blind formerly used on a shop in Abercregan and had latterly been used to cover an old bus engine to protect it from the elements.

I commissioned the local Claypits Pottery to make commemorative plaques for our exhibitors which were paid for by the show society and these were provided from 1984 to 1988. 1989 and 1991 we were given inscribed mugs made by Ewenny Pottery. I don't think there was a show in 1990, that was the year the site was waterlogged after a very wet summer.
