This claim will probably upset some die-hard Packard fans but here goes. The wonderful 1940, Packard Darrin and 1941, 120 Deluxe Woodie Wagon seen here, mark the end of Packard's glory years. The company that came out of WWII was no longer the vibrant legend of the American road. Yes the excellence was still there in that final decade but the mystique was gone as the company struggled to survive.

Now, to be fair, a part of that claim is based on the fact that the 1939-1942 Packards are personal favorites.

This image also demonstrates part of the design of the build. Most of the interior was left white or off-white so that it would act like a soft box, allowing light to bounce around the interior. The only light source on the interior is what is coming through the windows. The front section is the only part of the interior with some dazzle. I tried to imagine the experience of a potential buyer entering the space surrounded by the deep rich drapes and coppered, tin ceiling. That customer walks ten feet and the ceiling opens into a cathedral filled with gorgeous cars.

Yes, the floor will display cars made by other makers of luxury and orphan brands in the future. In the minds of Mr. Hendricks and myself, it will always be a Packard dealership.
