Split Rock sunset

            Split Rock Lighthouse is a major attraction along the Minnesota North Shore of Lake Superior.  So much so that many photographers seem to shun it as over photographed and "loved to death."  But I don't care (too much).  It was my first trip to the area, the location is indeed amazing, and we had an impressive sunset on top of that.  

The lighthouse was completed in 1910 and stands on top of a dramatic 40-meter high cliff.  It quickly became a tourist attraction.  Until 1924, however, it was accessible only by boat.  According to Wikipedia, the road that became Highway 61, still the major road in the area that follows the lake shore from Duluth to the Canadian border, was built to provide land access to the lighthouse.  I have my doubts that that was the main goal of the road, however.  The light was retired in 1969 and is now switched on once a year on November 10.
