USS RAVEN (AM 55) was the first ship of a new class of fleet mine sweepers built prior to and during World War II. She was built at the Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia, and commissioned into service on November 11th, 1940.

RAVEN was steel-hulled, 220 feet long, 32 feet wide, and displaced 810 tons. She had a crew of 105 men.

This is a "linen-style" postcard, which was never used.

RAVEN served throughout World War II in the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean. She served as a convoy escort, and participated in the landings in North Africa, off Utah Beach on D-day, and in southern France and northern Italy. She earned three battle stars for her World War II service.

Upon returning to the United States at the end of the European war, she was overhauled and sent to San Diego , arriving after VJ Day. She was decommissioned in the spring of 1946, but remained pierside in San Diego until sunk as a target in 1967.

The Universal Ship Cancellation Society (USCS) is a philatelic organization promoting the study of the history of ships, their postal markings and postal documentation of events involving the U.S. Navy and other Navy and maritime organizations of the world.

Collectors can be interested in the ship, its postmark, the cachet that occasionally appears on the envelope, special markings used by the ship or postal service, and, of course, the stamp.
