Pink Chaos

            There is a moment in time, seconds or maybe even less, where your life flashes before your eyes when you hear a voice utter "Breast Cancer." 

Every memory, every wish, every hope, every regret, every longing, heartbreak and love comes rushing back to you. 

The room feels like it's squeezing you. The person going over statistics and options sounds a millions miles away. 

Then you hear, "But we found it early. " And suddenly your consciousness chases after their voice, you finally take a deep breath, and you feel a flicker of comfort. 

That is how I remember the conversation in 2015 when my doctor stood beside me going over my biopsy results.

I was so lucky that early detection caught my breast cancer early. I see my breast Oncologist every 6 months and I remain under surveillance. I am one of the lucky ones thanks to my annual mammogram. 

Breast cancer is currently the most common cancer globally, accounting for 12.5% of all new annual cancer cases worldwide.

In 2022, an estimated 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 51,400 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

About 2,710 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2022. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 833.

I implore women and men to do self examinations regularly. Ladies, PLEASE get your mammograms annually, report anything unusual. Don't think because you are under 35 you are immune. Don't think that because you are male you cannot be diagnosed with breast cancer. 

Early detections save lives. I am proof of that.
