Lower Antelope Canyon - No. 3 - a photo on Flickriver

Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. The Canyon was formed by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding. The Canyon is separated into two parts - - the Upper and the Lower. The Lower Canyon, shown here, is named “Hazdistazí” or "spiral rock arches" by the Navajo. The Canyon was given its English name because many years ago herds of pronghorn antelope roamed freely in Antelope Canyon.

The spectacular colors of the walls of the Canyon are real. No artificial lights are allowed in the Canyon, so no colored lights, flash or gels were used to achieve the colors. The dramatic colors are caused by natural sunlight filtering in through the top of the narrow slot canyon and striking the sandstone walls at different angles. As you walk through the narrow canyon passageways, the colors change dramatically as your angle to the walls and the sun change.

Without question, this was the most spectacular part of our trip out West. It is almost impossible to take a bad picture inside the Canyon, as long as you maintain a sufficient shutter speed to prevent blurring. I watched as others around me with nothing more than cell phone cameras taking beautiful photographs of the multi-colored walls. Nearly every where you point a camera you will find a spectacular image.

The Canyon is well-known for the shafts of sunlight that can be photographed piercing the darkness into the Canyon. Unfortunately, we were there in late December and the sun does not achieve the best angle for creating these shafts of light during the winter months. We were further hindered by a blanket of clouds that prevented the sun’s rays from directly shining into the Canyon. Nonetheless, the Canyon was beautiful and now I have an excuse to return during the Spring or Summer.

The Lower Canyon is longer and deeper than the upper section, but also slightly more challenging. The Lower Canyon is much narrower, requiring a climb up and down several steep ladders and metal stairs.
