From Friday 13 to Sunday 29 August the city of Hasselt will welcome thousands of visitors to celebrate the 45th Septennial Virga Jesse Festivities. These festivities are an event officially recognized as Flemish cultural heritage.
The tradition of the devotion for Our Lady Virga Jesse dates back to the 14th century. This devotion has become a septennial tradition of Virga Jesse festivities since 1682. Only twice were the Septennial Festivities interrupted: during the period of the French revolution and in 1940, at the beginning of the Second World War. 
The 45th festivities in the septennial tradition got the theme “Virga Jesse Festivities 2010: time given to us”: time to meet each other, to enjoy the famous procession, the festively decorated town centre and the interesting cultural program. 
Procession
The procession or cortege* on 15, 22 and 29 August 2010 is certainly the highlight of the Virga Jesse festivities. On Wednesday 18 August 2010 the procession will be held in the evening. The illumination along the “Green Boulevard” will turn this procession into a very special event.
More than two thousand participants, assembled around the ancient sculpture of the Virga Jesse, will act out the most important scenes from Our Lady’s life, all placed in a modern context. This year the theme of the procession is
