Tasman Island III

            Tasman Island off the tip of the Forestier Peninsula from Cape Pillar, Tasmania. The tip of The Blade at the right - posted a colour one from there a little while ago.

Tasman Island has Australia's highest operational lighthouse at 276m above sea level. The lighthouse, visible in the centre of the island, was erected in 1906 and is constructed of curved, cast iron plates. The steeply-sided island was once only accessible to swap keepers and take on supplies by boat on very rare calm days (like the day I took this) and then by cable haulage-way from a point on the left (northern) side of the island to the top. Maintenance is now done by helicopter.

A low southwesterly swell, calm seas and drizzle patches with nothing but ocean all the way to Antarctica, 2,600km somewhere to the south.
