Half a train for Plymouth - a photo on Flickriver

A grimy 47636 ‘ Sir John Graeme’ passes the site of Saughton Junction, to the west of Edinburgh, with the 1C68 0845 Aberdeen to Carstairs service.

The apparently short train is explained by the fact that the train would join with the main train at Carstairs, joining 1V59, the 11:50 Glasgow Central to Plymouth service.

It's possible that Virgin Trains took inspiration from these short sets when it introduced the 4 and 5 car Voyager trains in 2002: perhaps they observed that as many passengers could fit into 4 coaches as used to fit into 8... and some even got seats!
