Short haul in the Nottinghamshire coalfield

            Taken from the steps of the signal box, 58007 'Drakelow Power Station' backs into the sidings at Thoresby Colliery Junction with  6T65, the 1300 Thoresby Colliery to High Marnham power station.

This misty, freezing day in January 1997 was very busy with traffic on the coal branches east of Shirebrook.     As well as traffic into the power station at High Marnham, coal trains were running from the collieries at Clipstone, Thoresby, Welbeck and Bilsthorpe, as well as from the stocking site at Rufford and the stockpile at the closed Bevercotes colliery.

Furthermore, a points failure at Welbeck Colliery Junction meant trains to and from Welbeck Colliery were running to Thoresby Colliery Junction to runround.

High Marnham was being served exclusively by Thoresby Colliery.     The track layout at Thoresby required much shunting: arrivals from High Marnham needed to run past the signal box then propel back into the sidings seen here, before reversing and running loco first to the colliery.

With no runround loop at the colliery, once loaded, trains propelled back along the mile long branch.    In these sidings, the locomotive ranaround the train (as this train is about to do), then propelled the train back onto the former 'mainline' towards High Marnham, reversed, and began the 10 mile journey to the power station.

I managed to take pictures of 10 different trains on this day, and I managed multiple images of several trains.   Apart from a lone class 60 at Clipstone colliery, all trains were operated by grimy class 58s in a similar state to this one.
