Push pull farewell heading for Weymouth

            33116 'Hertfordshire Railtours' skirts the Somerset and Dorset border just south of Yeovil while working 1Z33, the 0735 Waterloo to Weymouth.

The railtour commemorated the end of the use of the former Southern Region's push pull operations. The coaching stock on this tour was 4-TCs No.410 & 417, which were retained for excursion use after day to day use finished in 1989.

Although the train appears to be in open countryside, in reality it is in the middle of what was once a web of railway lines. 

To take this photograph I was standing just south of the Salisbury to Exeter route, viewed across that line, with Yeovil Junction station a few hundred metres out of frame to the left. Immediately out of frame to the left is the then freight-only spur connecting Yeovil Pen Mill to Yeovil Junction. 

The earthworks visible in my photograph beyond the 4th coach are for an embankment that once allowed trains from the joint GWR/LSWR Yeovil Town station to connect with the Salisbury to Exeter route and to head for Sherborne, Salisbury and to London. 

Finishing this junction, there was once a line from Yeovil Junction to the Weymouth line which ran behind me. This was known as the Clifton Maybank curve.
