Mundane Duties for Sir Edward Elgar - a photo on Flickriver

            In the last 8 days of semaphore signalling operation, 50007 'Sir Edwards Elgar' sweeps past Newton Abbot East signal box with an engineering train, presumably destined for Tavistock Junction yard in Plymouth.

The fresh ballast is an indication of the widespread rationalisation that was occurring at Newton Abbot at the time: the semaphore signalling was finally taken out of use at 2200 on Friday 1st May 1987.
