Sleeping Through Glen Truim - a photo on Flickriver

Passengers on the overnight 2116 London Euston to Inverness sleeper service are waking to gin-clear skies in the Cairngorm mountains.

67015 has started its descent from the highest point on the UK mainline railway at Drumochter summit (452m) and is approaching Dalwhinnie.

The bridge in the foreground is a listed building, built by General Wade as part of his military roads initiative in around 1730.

I was chuffed to 'bag' this image after seeking it for many years. I first became aware of this composition seeing the work of the late, great Bill Anderson, subsequently reinforced by an image on John Hooson's home page ( whitemaskmk2.smugmug.com/ ) which is quite superlative.

The power lines that follow Glen Truim are a relatively recent addition, being added in the 1990s. They certainly don't help the composition, but I cannot begrudge their existence: they give mains power to Balsporran Cottages. The cottages are a few miles further south through the glen and are a commonly used B&B by walkers and railway enthusiasts who wish to wake to views like this... though it does occasionally rain too ;-)
