Retro Boat Train Express - a photo on Flickriver

            In the last of the light after a showery autumn day, 73003 ‘Sir Herbert Walker’ slowly proceeds down the short branch from Millbrook to Southampton Western Docks with a special train from Waterloo in conjunction with a ship sailing from Berth 106.

The coaching set was known as the ‘Ocean Liner Express’, being launched in June 1994 by South West Trains, which was a ‘shadow’ franchise at that time, albeit still operated and wholly owned by British Rail. The set was used for charter operations, including charters such as this whereby the coaches were used on trains to the docks at Southampton.   

73003 was one of the 6 original class 73/0 locomotives built at Eastleigh in 1962 as opposed to the 1965-built class 73/1s built by English Electric at Newton-le-Willows.
