ROSE-FACED PARROT Pyrilia pulchra south of San Miguel de Los Bancos in Northwestern Ecuador early in the morning of August 1, 2013. Two adult Rose-faced Parrots were at a nest hole located just behind and to the left of this bird. The nest hole is located low in a large tree about 8 or 9 feet (3 meters) above the ground where the tree branches into massive limbs. The nest tree is located in a pasture near forest.

Formerly, Pyrilia pulchra was known by the scientific name Pionopsitta pulchra.

The Rose-faced Parrot is found in western Colombia and western Ecuador.

You may notice that the iris is sky blue, not the pale gray indicated in the description of the Rose-faced Parrot (or the pale yellow of the iris in Plate 31) in The Birds of Ecuador Field Guide by Ridgely and Greenfield.
