RUSTY FLOWERPIERCER Male Diglossa sittoides. This male Rusty Flowerpiercer is perching above a red Sleeping Hibiscus flower Malvariscus arboreus at our house in Mindo at an elevation of about 1,200 meters (3,937 feet) in northwestern Ecuador at 12:31 PM on August 26, 2014. It has been feeding at the red flowers in the hibiscus bush. Flowerpiercers have specialized bills which they use to pierce the base of flowers to obtain nectar.

The Rusty Flowerpiercer is a rare bird in Mindo which is situated below the elevation at which this species would usually be expected. We also saw a male of this species in Mindo in 2012.

The Rusty Flowerpiercer belongs to the tanager family Thraupidae and is found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia and Argentina.
