GREAT TINAMOU Tinamus major. A Great Tinamou is sitting by a small water-holding trough about noon on the warm, sunny day of March 6, 2004 in Tikal National Park in the northern part of Guatemala in the province known as el Departamento de Petén.

A pair of Great Tinamous was walking about and approached this "water hole" which is located along the lengthy Méndez Causeway which extends to the southeast from the Tikal Great Plaza and leads to the rather isolated Temple of the Inscriptions (Tikal Temple 6). The Méndez Causeway is mostly surrounded by tropical lowland forest. The tinamous drank water from this receptacle.

The Great Tinamou is usually difficult to see in the open at Tikal in contrast to the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, e.g., Carara National Park and Corcovado National Park, where it is much easier to get an unobstructed view. In 11 visits (56 cumulative days) to Tikal National Park from 1982 through 2004, this was the only occasion when I had an opportunity to obtain photographs of this species totally in the open.

The Great Tinamou belongs to the family Tinamidae and is found from southeast Mexico south through Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia, the Guianas, and Amazonian Brazil.

Un par del Tinamú Grande caminaba por la selva y llegó a un bebedero hecho de cemento alrededor de mediodía del día asoleado y caliente de 6 de marzo de 2004 en el Parque National Tikal en el norte de Guatemala en el Departamento de Petén. Los dos Tinamús pasaban un rato aqui y bebieron agua. El bebedero se ubicaba a lo largo del Calzada Méndez que conduce una larga distancia desde el Gran Plaza de Tikal al sureste hasta llegar al Templo de las Inscriptions (Templo VI).
