statue of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier

            The story goes that Bobby belonged to a night watchman named John Gray. When John Gray died in 1858, he was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. It's said that Bobby then spent the remaining 14 years of his life sitting by his master's grave, leaving only for food.

The loyal little dog became a local celebrity, and people would come to the kirkyard to see him. He was eventually given a license and a collar, and the Lord Provost of Edinburgh even paid for his annual license.

When Bobby himself died in 1872, he was buried just inside the entrance of Greyfriars Kirkyard, close to his master.

The statue, which you see in the image, was erected in 1873 by a wealthy philanthropist, Lady Burdett-Coutts, as a tribute to Bobby's legendary loyalty. It stands on a granite fountain at the junction of Candlemaker Row and George IV Bridge, near the entrance to Greyfriars Kirkyard.

Over the years, the statue has become a popular tourist attraction, and it's a heartwarming reminder of the enduring bond between humans and animals. You might notice that Bobby's nose is shiny – this is because it's a tradition for people to rub it for good luck!
