            The old man waits, glass poised in hand,
A bottle waiting, cork at stand.
Her name uncalled, the silence thin—
The cheer reserved for those who win.

He sips instead a bitter taste,
The bubbles fizz, going to waste.
Hope, like ghosts, escapes too fast—
Dreams unpopped, the moment passed.

The race is run, she didn’t win,
competition number in the bin,
All is lost, second best,
Disappointment in her chest.
