Purple Martin with Dragonfly (1 of 1)

            The Purple Martin chicks have fledged, and they seem to be flying everywhere around the wetland areas where artificial nest cavities have been provided for them.  My favorite time is after the chicks have hatched when adults are returning with bugs, often dragonflies as in the image posted here.  I’d like to thank Shelly Rosenberg, who I don’t know well, but well enough to know that she is dedicated to the Purple Martins and donates her time for their benefit.  In preparing this post I did a bit of research and learned some interesting facts about this species.  Here’s a word for you:  “synanthropic”.   It describes animals which have formed a relationship with human animals and includes Purple Martins.  Because they eat many insects, American Indians and farmers have provided housing of gourds or more modern materials which the Martins adopt and return to year after year.  I read that they are very dependent upon our assistance, at least in North America, as both European Starlings and diminutive house sparrows will fight to the death and oust them from their home if given the chance.  The nests we provide apparently are easier to defend and relied upon by the Martins.   Martins are colonial breeders and it’s a blast to see them knifing back in the air with food for their young.  They are our largest swallow and photographing them in flight is a fun challenge   Thanks Shelly and thank you Purple Martins.
