            CVS remains boarded up in downtown Raleigh, NC.
What began as peaceful demonstrations the last week of May 2020 in Raleigh, NC and across the country, as a result of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis Police, devolved into chaos after sundown. Looters destroyed monuments, storefronts, businesses, vehicles, and city and state property on Wilmington, Fayetteville and Salisbury streets. Police fired tear gas and pepper balls at violent looters in response. One of the very first casualties of the riots was the arson and looting of the sole CVS pharmacy in downtown Raleigh. It left a void for many senior citizens in the area, especially the elderly residents of the senior citizen building, the Sir Walter Raleigh, which, houses approximately 140 seniors in the 10 story building. Raleighites are now left to pick up the pieces, prepare for more unrest and seek ways to heal racial divisions. 80% of businesses have suffered irreparable financial damage. Downtown Raleigh was once a lively place at night. A place to be at night. A thriving nightlife. No mas!! All that is left are boarded up businesses, the homeless, mentally ill, drug addicted and a passing vehicle now and then.
