Chapel on the Bridge. - a photo on Flickriver

            St Mary's Bridge, occupies the site of an ancient river crossing on the Derwent, and for centuries the only way out of Derby for routes to the North and East. Originally a Fording point, earlier wooden structures, were eventually replaced by the present Stone Bridge between 1789-94, it was built by Thomas Harrison of Chester. 
The Bridge Chapel is from an earlier period, and one of the few remaining building of this type left in this country, they were once common, a place used for blessing travellers for a safe crossing of the river. It was restored in the 1930's, with further repairs last year.
