Old C&O Railroad Pole Line in Service Use

            Seneca County, Ohio

Shot taken of the CSX Pemberville Subdivision railroad pole line just north of Fostoria, Ohio. The CSX Pemberville Subdivision (former C&O) is one of the last eastern railroads to still be using open wire for their signaling system.

The two wires with the porcelain insulators are 440 volt power circuits used for power on the various signal apparatuses. The other wires are used for the signaling system, also called the code line. The top crossarms with the glass insulators without wires on them are the former communication lines used for either telephone or telegraph or both. These communication lines would of been taken out of service decades ago.

Modern technology of fiber optics, microwave, radio, satellite, and computers have been replacing the older open wire pole lines that were once a common sight along railroads.
