River House - a photo on Flickriver

River House

            This location seemed like a simple enough location to get to.  This is in Bears Ears National Monument. Yeah, there was a dirt road going to it.  On google maps, it looked like no big deal.  Totally made the list of must see's on the trip to Utah.  We set out in the Subaru, and my photo buddy, Tom, followed in his Chevy Silverado 4x4.  We pulled off the road and thought, maybe we should just take one car back there.  Well, lets take the truck, just in case.  Seemed simple enough.  Mannnnn did we make the right call.  First, the dirt road was more like sand, and deep sand at that.  It was all basically river bottom.  The sand seemed to come up to the doors.  I would have been freaking out, but Tom, the absolute champ, and retired firefighter, was not stressed.  He looked so unconcerned, I think he was not even blinking.  Cucumber cool.  Ok, I won't loose my stuff then.  I just kept telling him that this location would be totally worth it.  

Once out of the river bottom we seemed to be smooth sailing.  Nope.  We came up to what looked to me to be a cliff face.  We stopped, Tom got out and looked.  I stated that we could walk the rest of the way, no problem, its about a 40 minute walk from here.  Nope.  Tom said in a stoic manner, I can do it.  WHAT?!?! That's a cliff, you want to drive UP a cliff?  His wife was with us, she insisted he was crazy.  My wife was so scared that she had to close her eyes, cover her head, and scoot way down in the truck so she could not see out.  Tom then proceeded to slowly drive up the cliff face.  I was flabbergasted.  I could not believe this was happening.  Slowly, we made it to the top.  

The Anasazi/Puebloan dwelling was not far past that, and once there, there was a parking lot (dirt), and cute signs.  It looked like a happy normal place that many visit.  I don't know how.  I thought it was a miracle that we made there in a vehicle.  I took way more images than I normally would because i knew, I would never go back.  To those thinking about visiting River House, its fantastic, but be prepared.  You need a serious 4x4.  Heck, you need a 5x5. Perhaps you could chalk this up to my lack of experience in the 4x4 world.  Ok, I am just telling you how it felt to me.  Hope you like the image.  We almost died defying gravity.
