Tamawanas Ice slides - a photo on Flickriver

            These falls are never the same.  This was my first trip to Tamawanas Falls.  However, I looked at about 1,000 images of this waterfall before I went.  I was struck not only by how different each image was, but when I got there, I was taken by the fact that it seemed like a totally different waterfall than I had seen in the images.  

It has not been a very cold winter, naturally, that changes the look of the falls.  No HUGE ice columns like other years, no huge snow drifts.  The snow on the trees was also minimal, which drove the composition, because wide sweeping images of the canyon walls would not look very majestic.  They looked like spring!  So into the river I went.  The snow boots did not mind.  Using this comp I could go vertical and hide most the the non-snow conditions, and focus on the falls, what little snow there was, and the water, the cold, cold water.  I did not want to get too low here because i liked the slight leading line the river gave me to the falls.    

Adding to the complexity, the snow was falling hard while we were there, not nice happy snow, but large slush snow.  Shoot, wipe the lens, shoot wipe the lens. That's often the case in the summer too at these raging falls. If you look close at the image you can see the snow streaks.  

Lastly, and I know everyone says this about Tamawanas, the trail is SLICK!  I had crampons and was still sliding all over the place.  At the falls, its even worse.  I actually tried to climb up behind the falls.  Foregtaboutit!  With the slick ice, the slush rain, and the water from the falls hitting you like a shower- run away!  I could not do it.  The slush was increasing so we did not stay long, we ran for the trail.  

Maybe I can get that Victor Von Salza fishye-behind-the-falls image in the summer.
