Looking up at the Past - a photo on Flickriver

            Hovenweep offers many fantastic viewpoints of several different Anasazi/Puebloan ruins.  We were racing the sun through the desert on this visit.  The Rim Trail in Hovenweep is about 1.5 miles long, it circles a small canyon.  There are structures in the canyon but most are around the rim.  The sun was setting on us, and this time of year it sets fast.  I knew the best mages of the structures would be from the bottom of the canyon looking up.  Thing is, there is only one place to enter the bottom of the canyon, and it was opposite of where we were, so the dash was on.  The color in the sky was getting better and better as we went faster and faster.  By the time we hit the bottom of the canyon, there was really just the few structures there near the mouth of the canyon that we could get with the great color in the sky.

That suited me fine because one of these structures was Stronghold House, one of my favorite in Hovenweep.  You can see why in the image.  This structure got its name because its perched atop a rock, like a sentry watching over his fellow ruins.  The sky was not quite in peak color; that had past.  But the sun was bathing the Stronghold House with great golden hour light.  I was thrilled.  I shot this a hundred different ways in about 3 minutes before the light left us.  

This comp was my favorite. It captured the feeling you get with those HUGE southern Utah skys, and the strength and lonleyness you feel when you see these fantastic structures of the past.  He sits alone up there, isolated by design.  It almost seems like he is proud and sad at the time.  The lion on the rock watching.
